Thoreau's cove on Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts, is the particular spot this glass negative records, a small inlet tied to the writer who lived in a cabin by the pond from 1845 to 1847 and wrote *Walden* from those years. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced commercial views of American places around the turn of the twentieth century, made the plate between 1900 and 1910, when visitors to Concord were already treating the pond as a literary pilgrimage site. The image shows the wooded shoreline as Thoreau's readers would have pictured it, a view shaped as much by his book as by the landscape itself.
