Wayside stands on a rise in Concord, Massachusetts, where Nathaniel Hawthorne lived with his family in the 1850s and early 1860s. He had already made his name as a writer when he took up residence there, and the house became closely tied to his literary reputation. This c1901 print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which used the photochrom process to turn photographs into rich, saturated color images. Its vivid palette reflects the era's taste for picturesque views of historic American places.
