Two passengers sit side by side in the open cockpit of an early biplane, bundled against the wind in leather helmets and long coats. Photographs of this kind date from the first decades of powered flight, when a ride in an airplane was still a novelty and aircraft were built from wood, fabric and wire. Open cockpits left riders fully exposed to the weather, and the stiff, upright seating shows how little comfort early designers could offer. The picture is a useful record of the moment when flying moved from daring experiment toward everyday travel.
