This floor plan shows the New Congress Library in Washington, D.C., the building that became the Library of Congress's main structure and was later named the Thomas Jefferson Building. It is drawn in ink and watercolor on linen, a sturdy support that suited drawings meant for repeated consultation during construction. Designed by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed in the late 1890s, the building was meant to showcase the nation's library in a grand Beaux-Arts style. The drawing belongs to the Library's architectural and engineering collection, which preserves the working documents behind its buildings.
