The signal message "Hold the fort, for I am coming," flashed between Union hilltops during the fight, gave Allatoona Pass a lasting place in popular memory. The battle was fought on October 5, 1864, in northwest Georgia, where Union troops under John M. Corse defended the railroad that supplied William T. Sherman's army on its march toward Atlanta. The record associates this print with the Boston firm of Louis Prang & Co., which issued many battle scenes after the war, though that attribution is unverified. The date of c1887 likely reflects when the image was produced, so it is best read as a later commemorative view of the 1864 engagement.
