Everett Dirksen, the Illinois Republican who served in the U.S. Senate from 1951 until his death in 1969, is the subject of this halftone print, a reproduction made by a photomechanical process that turned a photograph into a pattern of tiny dots suitable for newspapers and magazines. Dirksen was known for his resonant voice and his skill as a Senate minority leader, and portraits of him circulated widely during his years in Washington. The caption card records no date, so the exact year of printing is unknown, but the halftone technique itself was the standard way such images reached the public in the first half of the twentieth century.
