*Prosperity* is an allegorical design, a figure standing for a idea rather than a real person, and it was printed as a label for a tobacco package around 1887. Color lithography was the main way to decorate such labels in the 1880s, and the New York firm Schumacher & Ettlinger, named on the copyright line, was one of the lithographers producing them. Makers used allegory like this to give a brand a pleasant, respectable image that buyers could recognize at a glance. The label shows how commercial printers borrowed classical and symbolic imagery to sell an everyday product.
