Junius Brutus Booth was one of the most celebrated tragic actors of the nineteenth century, and this half-length portrait shows him as the stage personality his audiences knew: a man whose intense, sometimes volatile performances made him a star on both sides of the Atlantic. Booth, the father of John Wilkes Booth, earned his reputation in Shakespearean roles such as Richard III and Lear, and he toured the United States extensively after emigrating from England in 1821. The record gives no date for the print, so it is best understood as a photographic likeness from the period when such portraits circulated widely as keepsakes of famous performers.
