Unlike many portraits on this board, this one is a small sixth-plate daguerreotype, a single mirror-like image on a silver-coated copper plate, showing a man from the head and shoulders, facing the camera squarely. The record does not name him or the photographer, but the picture survives among the papers of the American Colonization Society, which was organized in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. Daguerreotypes like this were made in large numbers between 1840 and 1860, when shorter exposure times made portraits affordable for many ordinary sitters.
