The subject here is a man posed in an oval mat, a presentation that was a common finish for daguerreotypes made in the early 1840s. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-coated copper plates, and the image sits on the surface like a mirror, so it shows best when tilted under light. Louis Daguerre announced his process in Paris in 1839, and by 1840 studios in the United States and Europe were turning out portraits like this one in large numbers. Because exposures then took minutes, sitters were asked to hold still, which is why their expressions tend to look serious and fixed.
