Few American battlefields have been photographed as often as the fields around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where three days of fighting in July 1863 ended the Confederate invasion of the North. Views like this one generally come from the battlefield's long afterlife rather than the fighting itself. By the 1880s and 1890s, veterans, local businesses and photographers were producing scenes of the ground for visitors and souvenir buyers, and the record does not name the photographer or exact date. The picture is still a useful reminder of how the site was remembered as well as how it was fought over.
