Paris in 1916 hosted an exhibition in the Jardin des Tuileries of paintings by artists serving on the front lines, and this color lithograph by Henri Dangon advertises it. The poster states that the event was held to benefit wartime works, a phrase that shows how French cultural life during the First World War was tied to fundraising for soldiers and relief efforts. Showing artists who were themselves in uniform gave the show a distinct appeal and linked the arts to the national cause. At about 121 by 79 centimeters, the sheet was built for the large street posters that were pasted up across the city.
