Few French home-front posters name their cause as plainly as this 1916 lithograph, which announces a special popular matinee to raise money for the Orphelins Mutualistes de la Guerre, or war orphans supported by mutual aid societies. Printed in sepia ink and signed by Louis Flot, the large sheet reflects how France, having lost enormous numbers of men, had many children left without a father. Benefit entertainments like this one gave civilians a way to contribute to relief without leaving home.
