What sets this poster apart is its date line: it announces an ascent for Wednesday, July 31st, from Vauxhall Gardens, the London pleasure grounds south of the Thames where Charles Green, the most celebrated English aeronaut of his day, launched many of his balloons. Vauxhall was a fashionable evening resort, and crowds paid to watch the ascents along with its music and fireworks. The poster was printed as a lithograph by G. Webb of Snow Hill, a commercial job meant to draw spectators. Its listed subjects include horses, a reminder of the carriage traffic that brought visitors to the gardens.
