Spectators crowd a open green field in this scene, craning their necks toward a balloon rising above them, a detail that sets it apart from pictures that show the balloon alone. Ballooning drew large public audiences in France from the late eighteenth century, when the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air flights of 1783 turned ascents into major public spectacles. Crowds gathered at launch sites on fair days to watch the gas and hot-air craft lift off, and prints like this one recorded the excitement of those outings for viewers who could not be there. The printed landscape behind the crowd is worth a close look, since it shows how such events were framed for a broad audience.
