The title, which translates as "Thirty Days of Pleasures," points to a month-long run of amusements, and the balloon basket at the center suggests aerial spectacle was the main draw. Color lithographic posters like this one filled Paris streets in the late 1800s, when printers and artists such as Jules Chéret turned the billboard into popular art. Balloon flight was still a novelty then, so a balloon made a natural symbol of excitement. Notice how the bold colors and simple shapes were meant to be grasped by passersby in a few seconds.
