This 1885 Paris poster advertises a balloon navigation event under the name Arènes du Sport Aéronautique, placing the sport in a public arena rather than in the open sky. By the 1880s ballooning had become a popular spectacle in France, a generation after balloons carried mail and passengers out of the besieged capital in 1870 and 1871. Posters like this were printed in bold color lithography to catch the eye on crowded city walls, and they show how aerial sport was sold to ordinary Parisians.
