The house in this view is the commandant's residence at the Washington Navy Yard, the official home of the officer in charge of the yard on the Anacostia River in southeast Washington. The Navy established the yard in 1799, making it one of the service's oldest shore installations, and the commandant's house stood among its most formal buildings. This c1888 photographic print carries a copyright notice in the name of George Barrie, a photographer and publisher of views of government and naval sites, which suggests it was made for sale as part of a published series. Its survey of the grounds offers a record of how the yard looked in the late 1800s.
