Horse-drawn carriages and a hotel are the focus of this view of the Adirondack Mountains, and its catalog tags also link it to Lake Champlain. The photographer, S.R. Stoddard, worked from Glens Falls, New York, and spent decades recording the region's summer resorts, lakes and mountain roads, with views sold to visitors as souvenirs. By the early 1890s, railroads and steamboats were bringing well-to-do travelers to the Adirondacks, so a carriage on a resort road captures the leisure economy that grew up around the wilderness. The date of about 1893 is an estimate from the caption card and should be read as approximate.
