Evalyn Walsh McLean, a young heiress who had married Edward Beale McLean in 1908, is posed here with an automobile on the family's estate. The Walsh fortune came largely from her father's Camp Bird gold mine in Colorado, which helped finance a lifestyle that included fine cars and grand homes. Around 1909, motorcars were still a novelty for most Americans, so a privately owned automobile on a country property signaled both wealth and the new mobility of the Progressive Era. Later she became known for owning the Hope Diamond, a fact that gives this quiet scene an unexpected second life.
