Few Boston streets were laid out with the ambition of the Tontine Crescent, a curved row of brick townhouses on Franklin Place designed by Charles Bulfinch in the early 1790s. The houses were financed through a tontine, a subscription scheme in which investors shared the income and the last surviving holder took the property, and the crescent became one of the city's fashionable addresses. Its graceful arc broke with the straight grid of most Boston streets, which makes it a distinctive subject for a city view. The row was cleared in the 1850s, so the picture preserves a streetscape that no longer exists.
