The title draws a deliberate parallel. The street fighting in Baltimore on April 19, 1861, fell on the same calendar day as the skirmish at Lexington in 1775, so the publisher set the modern clash beside the opening blow of the Revolution. The scene shows the confrontation on Pratt Street, where Massachusetts volunteers marching through the city toward Washington were attacked by a crowd of secessionist sympathizers with stones and gunfire. Several soldiers and civilians died, and the episode became one of the first deadly clashes of the Civil War. Currier & Ives, a New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, turned such news into images quickly, and this print reflects how Northern audiences wanted the event understood.
