Set on the Flathead Reservation in northwestern Montana, this stereograph shows Native women preparing the evening meal at camp, a domestic moment that studio portraits seldom recorded. The card was copyrighted by N.A. Forsyth of Butte, Montana, and its c1908 date falls within the years when stereo views were a popular parlor entertainment. Commercial photographers of the period often marketed scenes like this as glimpses of everyday life, so the staging deserves a second look. The reservation was home to the Salish and Kootenai peoples, whose communities had been reshaped by treaty and land policy.
