Here a woman stands at a cannon during the Battle of Monmouth, fought near Freehold, New Jersey, on June 28, 1778. The figure is Molly Pitcher, a nickname for women who carried water to exhausted soldiers in the summer heat, and for the legend of one who took over a gun when her husband fell. Historians have long debated how much of that story is fact, since several women may have been blended into one figure. E. Percy Moran's scene, issued as a color halftone around 1911, reflects the period's appetite for patriotic episodes from the Revolution.
