Ophelia, the drowning figure from Shakespeare's *Hamlet*, is the subject here, shown in a color lithograph after a painting by R. Redgrove, R.A., a member of the Royal Academy. Between 1880 and 1900, Ophelia was one of the most frequently painted literary heroines in Britain, drawn again and again with her flowers, loose hair, and melancholy. Chromolithographs like this were printed from several stones or plates, one for each color, which brought gallery subjects into middle-class parlors at modest cost. The process typically turns a painting's brushwork into layered flat tints, so the print's surface is worth comparing with the original's.
