The title names Portia, the heiress from Shakespeare's *The Merchant of Venice*, who is best known for disguising herself as a young lawyer to argue for mercy in the trial scene. Fanny Bowers's painting was reproduced here as a chromolithograph, a color printing process that flourished in the late nineteenth century and let publishers sell reproductions of paintings to middle-class households at modest prices. The print's date falls between 1880 and 1900, when such images often hung in parlors and sitting rooms as affordable art. Its subject, a learned and resolute woman, fits the period's interest in literary heroines.
