Few places in the flood's aftermath show the damage as plainly as the Cambria mills, the Cambria Iron Company works that anchored the economy of Johnstown. On May 31, 1889, a dam on the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River gave way after days of heavy rain, and the released water rushed down the valley into the town, killing more than 2,000 people. The stereo card, issued about 1889, was one of many views sold to a public eager to see the wreckage, and viewed through a stereoscope its twin images give the twisted debris a startling depth.
