Labeled "Conemaugh Valley" and numbered 7 in its series, this stereograph card ties a landscape view to the Johnstown disaster of May 31, 1889. That afternoon the South Fork dam, which held back a reservoir above the town, failed after days of heavy rain, and a wall of water rushed down the valley, killing more than 2,000 people and destroying much of Johnstown. Stereo views like this were sold in numbered sets and viewed through a hand viewer, which gave a national audience a three-dimensional look at a disaster that had reached most of them mainly through newspaper accounts.
