Aberdeen, Washington, in 1912 was a lumber town at the meeting of the Chehalis and Wishkah rivers, a few miles from Grays Harbor and the Pacific. Sawmills, shingle mills, and logging camps in the surrounding forests provided most of the work, and ships carried finished lumber out of the harbor to markets up and down the coast and overseas. Rail lines, including the Northern Pacific, brought in timber cruisers, mill hands, and settlers, and the population had grown quickly since the town's incorporation in 1890. From the hill above town, residents could see the mill smokestacks, the river waterfront, and the streets of a community that measured its progress by the next shipment of lumber.
