Everett, Washington, in 1912 was a young mill city on Possession Sound, about 30 miles north of Seattle, with a population of roughly 24,000. Lumber milling, shingle production, and shipping through its deepwater harbor drove the local economy, and the Great Northern Railway's tracks gave the town a direct link to markets across the country. Civic life centered on downtown streets such as Hewitt Avenue, where banks, hotels, and offices reflected the ambitions of a community that had been platted only two decades earlier by investors who expected it to become a major Pacific Northwest city. Residents of the period would have known Everett as a working town of mills, smokestacks, and railroad sidings, still growing and still building its streets and buildings.
