A Nagasaki woodcut that places the American naval commander Matthew Perry in Japanese popular print, colored on thin hōsho paper. The record credits the engraver Koizumi Minokichi (1833–1906), who worked in Nagasaki, the one port where Japan kept limited trade with foreigners before 1854. The catalog date of 1850 comes before Perry's arrival in Edo Bay in 1853, so it is likely an estimate. Prints like this circulated widely after the American squadron came, drawing crowds with images of the unfamiliar visitors and their ships.
