Stieglitz's photogravure shows a rain-soaked New York street, with the wet pavement and gray spring weather that give the title its meaning. He made the image in 1900, during the years when he was championing photography as a fine art and working to show that a camera could produce soft, painterly tonal effects. The photogravure process, which printed from an etched copper plate, suited that goal, and the plate was reproduced in *Camera Work*, the journal Stieglitz edited, in October 1911. An old caption card links the scene to street cleaning, but that note is unverified, so the rain itself is the safest guide to what the picture records.
