Mulberry Street, in the heart of Manhattan's Little Italy, is the setting for this turn-of-the-century view of bread peddlers at work. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American scenes printed in the decades around 1900, made the photograph, and its caption card links the subject to street vending and to the Italian immigrant community that had settled in the neighborhood. Such street scenes were valued at the time as records of immigrant labor, and they show how goods moved directly from carts and hand-carried baskets into the crowded tenement district. The record itself is thin, so the precise day and the names of the vendors are not known.
