This lithograph turns the 1838 New York municipal contest into a horse race, and its title, "The three mares/mayors," puns on the candidates' offices. The subjects named in its record are Aaron Clark, Richard Riker and Isaac L. Varian, all tied to the city's politics of that decade. Spring elections in New York were fiercely fought between Tammany Hall and the Equal Rights party, often called Locofocos, and cartoonists often used racing imagery to mock the scramble for office. The print is signed "Shanks," probably the caricaturist Edward Williams Clay, and was published in New York by H. R. Robinson.
