Count Illarion Vorontsov-Dashkov appears in this head-and-shoulders study, turned to the right, in a format that was popular with officials and courtiers in the 1870s and 1880s. In 1881 he became Minister of the Imperial Court under Alexander III, a post that placed him at the center of court ceremony and household affairs. The card was made by Bergamasco, a photography studio in St. Petersburg. It came to the Library of Congress as part of the George Kennan Papers, transferred from the Manuscript Division in 1973, and may interest researchers studying Kennan's Russian connections.
