Wawel, the royal castle on a limestone hill above the Vistula River, is the subject that sets this poster apart from others of Kraków. Polish kings were crowned and buried in its cathedral for centuries, and the city served as the royal capital until Sigismund III moved the court to Warsaw in 1609. Drawn by W. Chomicz and printed in color rotogravure around 1935, the poster was issued under the Polish State Railways, which used such images to attract travelers in the years after Poland regained independence in 1918.
