Unlike the galloping and jumping studies that usually come to mind with horse pictures, this page shows hoofprints made at an ordinary pace, as the title says. It comes from *The Prairie Traveler*, the 1859 handbook by Army Captain Randolph B. Marcy, which gave emigrants, soldiers and surveyors practical advice on crossing the plains. Marcy's guide covered everything from camp routines to reading signs on the ground, and reading the tracks of horses and other animals was a useful skill for travelers who had to judge how far ahead a herd or party had gone.
