Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was a young women's college in 1916, founded in 1889 with money left by the local merchant Dexter Edgar Converse. Spartanburg was a Piedmont textile town, where cotton mills and the railroads that carried cloth and raw cotton shaped much of daily life. Students came largely from families across the state and the wider South, and they studied literature, languages, the sciences, and music at a time when few women went on to university. The campus was still young compared with the older colleges of the Carolinas, and it stood in a city that took pride in its schools and churches. In 1916 the United States remained at peace, though the war in Europe was already drawing close attention in Southern newspapers.
