The adobe walls and bastions of Sutter's Fort rose on the bank of the American River in the Sacramento Valley, built by Swiss-born settler John Sutter beginning in 1839 under Mexican land grant. It served as the hub of his agricultural and trading settlement, New Helvetia, and its garrison and storehouses drew traders, trappers and emigrants. Gold was found at Sutter's sawmill nearby in January 1848, and the rush that followed transformed the region and the fort's fortunes. This color halftone was printed decades later, in the period between 1890 and 1940, when the fort had become a symbol of California's pioneer past and was being preserved as a historic site.
