Few state symbols carry as much history as the grizzly bear on California's flag, and this color lithograph shows it standing over the words "California Republic." The design traces back to the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, when American settlers raised a hand-painted banner with a bear in Sonoma, and the legislature adopted a version of it as the official state flag in 1911. By the time prints like this circulated, the grizzly was vanishing from the state, with the last confirmed California grizzly killed in 1922, so the animal had become a symbol of a species largely gone.
