A wagon train winds across the plains of Nebraska in this hand-colored wood engraving, which its title places on the way to California. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Great Plains were often labeled the "Great American Desert" on maps and in guidebooks, a name that reflected how little settlers knew of the region's water and grass. Emigrants bound for California followed the Platte River valley through Nebraska, often for weeks before reaching the Rocky Mountains. The print's date is only given as a range from 1850 to 1900, so its exact origin is uncertain, but its subject reflects the westward movement that followed the 1849 gold rush.
