Canal Street in Merced, California, pictures one of the working thoroughfares of a San Joaquin Valley town that grew quickly after the railroad reached it in 1872. The record gives only an approximate date, between 1880 and 1900, and the print comes from the Wittemann Collection, a group of late nineteenth-century California street views held by the Library of Congress.
