A glowing evening sky over California mountains and still water gives this 1864 chromolithograph its title, *Sunset*. It was published by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm of Louis Prang, who did much to make color lithography popular in the United States. Each color was printed separately from its own stone, so the soft gradations of light on the water were built up layer by layer. Scenic views of the far West like this one found eager buyers in the East during the Civil War years, many of whom would never see such landscapes in person.
