Oxen hauling covered wagons across open plains give this engraving its particular focus, setting it apart from other emigrant scenes. Felix Octavius Carr Darley made the design, and Henry Bryan Hall Jr. engraved it for D. Appleton & Co. of New York around 1869, the year the first transcontinental railroad was completed. By then the overland trails to California and Oregon, once crossed by wagon trains over several months, were giving way to the rails, so the picture shows a migration already passing into memory.
