The statue shows Jefferson Davis full-length, the work of sculptor Augustus Lukeman and installed in the U.S. Capitol. Davis had served as a U.S. senator from Mississippi and as secretary of war before becoming president of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Placing his likeness in the Capitol was a contested decision, because it honored a leader of the secession movement and reflected how the nation chose to remember the war in the decades after Reconstruction. The record dates this print only to between 1930 and 1960, so it likely documents the statue in the middle of the twentieth century.
