The Statue of Freedom, the bronze figure crowning the dome of the U.S. Capitol, came down in a single day in 1993, when on May 9 a helicopter lifted it from its pedestal so it could be restored. The statue was designed by Thomas Crawford and placed atop the dome in 1863, and it had weathered more than a century of Washington summers and winters before this work began. This picture records that moment, a rare chance to see the figure suspended in the air rather than high above the city. It was documented as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey, the federal program that has recorded important American structures since the 1930s.
