Few objects on the Capitol carried more meaning during the Civil War than the bronze figure of Freedom, shown here in a stereo view dated January 1863, before it was raised to the dome. Thomas Crawford designed the statue, and it was cast in sections at Clark Mills' foundry in Washington, then hoisted into place in December 1863. The card's notes credit Titian Peale, and the two side-by-side images give the figure a depth that a single print cannot.
