Titled "Booty" and drawn in India ink over pencil, this editorial cartoon by Clubb ran in the Rochester Herald on May 11, 1915, just four days after a German submarine sank the British liner Lusitania off the Irish coast. The sinking killed 1,195 people, including 128 American citizens, and the cartoon's pirate imagery, reflected in its subject headings, expresses the outrage that spread through American newspapers in the following days. Editorial cartoons of this period often delivered a quick moral verdict on current events, and this one shows how the attack was cast as a crime against civilians.
