A silkscreen print titled *Mask*, made by Ben Shahn in 1959, this work belongs to an edition of 75 and is signed in red paint. Shahn, born in Lithuania in 1898 and raised in Brooklyn, built his reputation on socially charged images of injustice and ordinary life, and he worked in screenprinting to put his designs in more hands than single paintings could reach. The catalog tracings list the subject as masks, a motif that suggests concealment and identity, themes that recur throughout twentieth-century art. The red signature is a useful detail for telling this impression apart from others in the edition.
