Here the sitter turns toward an African mask and a textile hung on the wall, a pairing that points straight to her years abroad. Karen Blixen, the Danish writer who published as Isak Dinesen, ran a coffee farm near Nairobi from 1914 to 1931, and her memoir *Out of Africa* (1937) grew out of that experience. Carl Van Vechten, the American writer and photographer, made the portrait on January 29, 1959, as part of his large series of sittings with notable figures of his time. The objects around her frame the portrait as much as her face does.
